What inpatient eating disorder treatment costs in 2026
Pricing care for an eating disorder while you are worried about someone you love is hard. The numbers are clearer than they look.
If you or someone you love is in danger right now, call or text 988. The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is free, private, and open all day, every day.
A day in Johns Hopkins’ hospital eating disorder unit averaged $2,295 in charges for adults treated for anorexia, a 2017 study in the International Journal of Eating Disorders found.1 Residential treatment, where you live at the program, runs $1,000 to $2,500 a day across the US, the Colorado Sun reported in 2025, and most stays last four to eight weeks.2 At the private end, Maui Recoveryconfirms about $60,000 for 30 days,3 paid privately or through PPO out-of-network benefits.4
Care covered by insurance is a strong option too. Your insurer can list the programs in your plan, and SAMHSA’s free National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, refers families to state-funded and sliding-scale programs, day or night.5

What each level of care gives you, and what it charges
The level of care follows how much support the body and mind need right now. Each step down costs less per day and gives you more of your own life back.
| Level of care, and what it gives you | What it charges |
|---|---|
| Hospital inpatientPhysicians and nurses around the clock while the body stabilizes | $2,295 a day on average, in charges, at Johns Hopkins (2003 to 2015)1 |
| Partial hospitalizationA full treatment day at the program, then home each night10 | $1,567 a day on average, same study1 |
| ResidentialYou live at the program, with meals, therapy and staff on site day and night | $1,000 to $2,500 a day nationally (Colorado Sun, 2025)2 |
| Private residentialUp to eight guests, in three private homes8 | From about $60,000 for 30 days at Maui Recovery (program-confirmed, August 2026)3 |
A month at those residential rates comes to $30,000 to $75,000. A 2006 national survey of residential programs, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, found an average of $956 a day and an average stay of 83 days, about $79,000 for a full stay.6
Your daily rate pays for a team that works from one plan
Eating disorder treatment combines therapy, medical monitoring and nutrition counseling, the National Institute of Mental Health explains.7 Each part is a person on staff: a therapist, a physician or nurse, and a dietitian who plans meals with you.
The length of stay sets the total. At $1,500 a day, four weeks comes to $42,000 and eight weeks to $84,000. When you compare programs, ask each one for its daily rate, the stay it expects, and what the rate includes, in writing.

A house of eight where one team treats the eating disorder and the addiction beside it
Maui Recovery treats eating disorders alongside trauma, depression, and alcohol and opioid addiction, with up to eight guests at a time in three private homes on fifteen acres in Lahaina.89
That breadth serves a common pattern. Eating disorders and substance use often occur together, and SAMHSA’s 2025 advisory finds that people do best when one coordinated team treats both.10
When the body needs medical stabilization first, a hospital eating disorder unit is the place to begin, and a residential program follows once you are stable. For an eating disorder that stands on its own, programs that treat eating disorders exclusively bring a dedicated medical and dietary team. Our eating disorder guide lists what to ask them.
In Europe, Paracelsus Recovery in Zurich lists eating disorders among its specialties and gives one guest at a time a full clinical team of its own.
