What to pack for luxury rehab.
By the LuxuryRecovery Editorial Team1,000 words · 4 min read
In short
Pack a week of comfortable clothing, not a month of it — every private program has laundry. Bring your own toiletries in their original containers, prescriptions in the labelled bottles, ID and insurance cards, and the few personal things that make a room yours. Leave weapons, tools, large cash and valuables at home. Phones and laptops are usually allowed with restrictions, and the rules differ by program.

The gap between deciding and admitting is usually a couple of days, and packing is the one part of it you can finish. It is also the part people get wrong in the same direction every time: they pack for a month.
A private residential program is a house with washers, dryers and the soap to run them, and it hands you bedding, blankets and towels at the door1. A week of clothes covers thirty days. The rest is luggage you carry twice and open once.
The Ranch Malibu says the quiet part plainly and asks guests to pack light on purpose, discouraging formal clothes, jewellery and anything of real or sentimental worth2. That instinct is right across the tier. Nothing in a residential month requires a watch you would be sorry to lose.
The list
Bring, leave, and already there.
| Category | What that means in practice |
|---|---|
| Clothing | A week’s worth, indoor and outdoor: jeans, sweats, shorts, T-shirts, a couple of sweaters, a light jacket, pyjamas and a robe. Gym clothes and swimwear. |
| Shoes | Trainers you have already broken in, something durable for a trail, and flip-flops for the beach or the shower. |
| Toiletries | Your own, in the original containers rather than decanted into travel bottles — programs check them in on arrival. |
| Medication | Original bottles with the pharmacy label attached. Supplements in original packaging, and often capped — The Meadows Malibu allows three. |
| Documents | Driving licence or state ID, insurance and prescription cards, and any advance directive you want on your chart. |
| Devices | Usually allowed with access restricted during programming and overnight. Confirm the policy before you fly. |
| Home | Photographs, a book, stationery and stamps, your own pillow or blanket. Programs invite this, and the room is better for it. |
| Leave at home | Firearms and ammunition, knives and tools, large amounts of cash, jewellery and valuables. A small amount of spending money is held for you and released for personal necessities. |
| Already there | Bedding, blankets, towels, washcloths, laundry and soap. Some programs issue their own gear list once your stay is confirmed. |
The one that matters
The phone question.
Packing is settled in an hour. The device policy is what people actually want to know, because it decides whether a month away is survivable for the work they are leaving behind.
The Meadows Malibu names laptops and phones on its packing list and permits them with access restricted during programming and overnight1. Others run an intake blackout first, and a few publish nothing at all. We compared every stated policy in Malibu in our guide to phone and laptop rules, including who publishes a number and who leaves it to intake.
Ask admissions the question directly before you fly, and ask for the answer in writing. A program that handles it plainly on the phone is telling you something about how the rest of the month will be handled.
If the program is not chosen yet, that is the decision worth spending the two days on rather than the packing. Amend Malibu runs residential mental health care in two private houses above the coast, six guests to a house, every one in a private room.
