Comparison · Malibu
The other Malibu programs, and what each one publishes.

If you are comparing Malibu programs against Passages, four things decide it: what clinical model the program runs, how many guests are in the house at once, how it handles privacy, and whether it is built for the particular problem you are treating. Cost matters, but at this tier it is rarely the question that settles it. Passages Malibu is a long-established program on a hillside estate above the Pacific, built around one-to-one sessions with each guest’s week planned individually. Within a few miles of it sit six others, each built around something different. This page puts all seven side by side.
Why people compare in the first place
People search for alternatives because something specific about their own situation hasn’t been answered yet. In our inquiries, it is almost always one of five things: the clinical approach on offer isn’t the one their psychiatrist recommended; the guest wants a house with fewer people in it; a bed is not available in the week it is needed; the situation needs something specific, like on-site detox or a trauma-led program; or the plan has out-of-network benefits worth using.
Each of those points at a different program, and none of them is a verdict on the first one. Treat the comparison as matching, not ranking.
Seven Malibu programs, and what each is built around
Listed alphabetically. This is not a ranking, and it is deliberately not sorted by price — the column that should decide it is the middle one. Figures checked July 2026; each program’s admissions team is the authoritative source for a current quote.
| Program | What it is built around | 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| Amend Malibu | Two six-guest houses, Joint Commission accredited, running near one-to-one staffing. The smallest documented intake on this list, which is what a guest who wants to be one of six rather than one of thirty is looking for.3910 | $90,000 for a 30-day stay (program-confirmed) |
| Cliffside Malibu | A larger program under Discovery Behavioral Health, with the wider on-site medical capability and fuller peer group that size brings. Works with many commercial insurance carriers, in-network or out-of-network.6 | $30,000–$91,000 / month (third-party estimate) |
| Meadows Malibu | Part of the Meadows group, whose trauma-led clinical model is documented in depth across its other properties. Private-pay, working with out-of-network benefits.8 | Not published |
| Passages Malibu | A hillside estate above the Pacific and one of the most recognized names in American recovery. Built around one-to-one sessions, with each guest's week planned individually rather than around a fixed group schedule.12 | Not published |
| Rise in Malibu | Detox capability on site, so a stay that has to begin with medical withdrawal does not start with a transfer. One of the few programs at this tier to publish its cash rate on its own site.4 | $90,000 for a 30+ day stay (published) |
| Seasons in Malibu | A psychotherapy-heavy program that states it works with most PPO insurance, and supplies the widest published range on the coast — useful when the plan's out-of-network benefit is still an unknown.5 | $69,500–$129,000 (facility-supplied range) |
| The Pointe Malibu | An ocean-view residential setting. The figure beside it is a third-party estimate; the program quotes its own rate through admissions.7 | From ~$75,000 / month (third-party estimate) |
Three of the seven give you a rate you can hold: Amend confirmed $90,000 for a 30-day stay to this directory in August 2026,9 Rise publishes $90,000 for a 30-plus-day stay on its own site,4and Seasons supplies a $69,500–$129,000 range through its Psychology Today listing.5The rest, Passages among them, quote the figure on a call with admissions. The estimate that circulates most widely for Passages, around $95,000 a month, is published as an estimate rather than the program’s rate.2 That is worth knowing before a call, but it is not the thing to choose on. Two programs can post the same number and run entirely different weeks.

Intake size is the difference you will feel
A six-guest house carries a full clinical team — psychiatrist, licensed therapists, medical and support staff, a chef — for a handful of people, so the therapy runs one-to-one rather than in groups, and the guest list stays short enough to stay private. A thirty-bed program divides that same attention thirty ways, and in exchange carries a wider range of on-site medical capability and a fuller peer group, which some people need and others do not. That trade is the real decision on this coast. Price follows that trade rather than driving it. The smaller house costs more because the arithmetic says it must. Our ranking of Malibu’s most private programs sorts the coast on exactly that axis, and the full Malibu cost breakdown carries every figure with its source.
Three questions worth asking every program you call
- How many guests are in the house the week I would arrive? Licensed capacity and current census are different numbers. Ask for the second one.
- What does the quoted rate include, and what is billed separately? Psychiatry, medication, lab work, and transport are the four that most often sit outside the headline figure.
- Who runs the clinical program, and what are their credentials? A named clinical director with a verifiable license is the shortest reliable signal there is. Our guide to vetting a treatment center covers the rest.
Where distance does more than coastline
Malibu’s appeal is a real one: coastline, small private houses, and a dense cluster of high-end programs inside a few miles. But if the point of leaving home is distance — from a city, a workplace, a supply, a set of people — then inland Florida, Hawaii, or Europe deliver considerably more of it. We keep a piece on exactly that question, and the full directory spans all of it.
