Switzerland or Spain? Two tiers, two different jobs.

The short version

Choose Switzerland when privacy has to be absolute or the medical side is complicated: Clinic Les Alpes publishes from CHF 60,000 a week with full in-house detox, and Paracelsus Recovery treats one guest at a time at CHF 110,000 a week.1Choose Spain when the condition needs time rather than seclusion: Camino Recovery in Andalúcia keeps a maximum of eight guests,3 works deeply in trauma, and costs a fraction of the Swiss tier — so the same budget buys two or three months instead of three weeks. Length of stay changes outcomes more reliably than anything money buys in a single week.

The Swiss case

When is Switzerland the right answer?

Three situations, and they are specific. The first is a medically complicated withdrawal — a long drinking history, benzodiazepines in the mix, previous seizures — where a doctor in the building at three in the morning is the entire point. Clinic Les Alpes includes full in-house detox in its published weekly figure.1

The second is privacy that has to hold under pressure: a public role, a listed company, a family whose name is the business. Paracelsus Recovery admits one guest at a time — nobody else is in the programme to recognise you, which is a structural guarantee rather than a policy one. That is what CHF 110,000 a week buys.2

The third is a previous admission that did not work in a group setting. Some people cannot do the work in front of others, and a fourth attempt at a shared programme is not a plan.

The Spanish case

When is Spain the better programme?

When what the person needs is time. Camino Recovery sits outside Vélez-Málaga with never more than eight guests in the house,3 and builds trauma-focused work and equine therapy into the core programme rather than offering them as afternoon extras. For someone whose drinking sits on top of something that happened twenty years ago, eight weeks of that does more than three weeks of anything.

It also suits people who want to be known. A house of eight means group process — other people at the table, in the same week of the same work. Some guests find that unbearable and should be in Switzerland. Others find it is the first time in years they have not felt like the only person carrying this, and the group is the medicine.

The trade to accept: less seclusion, a longer flight home from Málaga than from Zurich, and a programme that publishes no rate, so the number comes from a conversation rather than a page.

Questions people ask

Choosing between them, answered plainly.

Is rehab in Switzerland better than Spain?
Not better — different, and built for different situations. Switzerland is where you go when privacy is absolute, the medical picture is complicated, or a previous admission failed in a group setting. Spain is where you go when what you need is a longer stay, a small group, and a programme that goes deep on trauma. A complex detox belongs in Switzerland. A twelve-week trauma programme on a Swiss budget does not exist.
How much does rehab in Switzerland cost?
The Swiss tier publishes real numbers, which is rare in this field. Clinic Les Alpes above Montreux publishes from CHF 60,000 a week, covering the individual programme and hospitality services with full in-house detox where it is needed. Paracelsus Recovery in Zurich publishes CHF 110,000 a week for its four-week residential programme, and CHF 130,000 for a seven-day executive detox.
How much does rehab in Spain cost?
Spanish programmes generally do not publish rates, and Camino Recovery in Andalucía is no exception — but the tier sits well below Switzerland, which is the point. For the price of three or four Swiss weeks, a Spanish programme typically buys two to three months. Where the condition needs time rather than seclusion, that trade favours Spain heavily.
Which is better for alcohol detox?
If withdrawal is likely to be medically complicated — a long heavy-drinking history, previous seizures, benzodiazepines in the picture, or significant liver involvement — the Swiss clinics are built for it, with medical detox on site and a doctor in the building. For a straightforward supervised detox followed by a long therapeutic stay, a Spanish programme with medical cover handles it, and the money saved buys the weeks that actually change the outcome.
Does language matter in a European programme?
Yes, more than people expect. Therapy happens in language, so a programme where your first language is a second language for the therapist is a compromise. Both Swiss clinics and the Spanish programme in this comparison work in English as a matter of course, which is why they attract British, Irish and American guests — but confirm which specific clinicians will be doing your one-to-one work, not just that the programme is English-speaking.
What about aftercare when you go home?
This is the question that separates programmes that have treated many foreign guests from those that have not. Ask, before admission, who arranges the therapist and psychiatrist at home, whether that is set up during the stay or after discharge, and what the programme provides in the first ninety days back. Paracelsus publishes aftercare from CHF 2,500 a day, including a live-in therapist travelling home with the guest — the far end of what is possible, and a useful benchmark to ask others about.

Not sure which one fits? Tell us the situation and we’ll name the program built for it, even one we don’t list, when that’s the honest answer.

If you would rather not weigh this alone: describe the situation, including what the stay has to protect and how long the person can realistically be away, and we will tell you which of the two tiers fits — including when the answer is neither. .
