Setting

Partial hospitalization program (PHP)

Also called: PHP, day treatment.

Short definition

A PHP provides 20 to 30 hours per week of structured clinical care during the day while the client goes home each evening.

PHP sits between residential and intensive outpatient on the care spectrum. The typical format is five or six days a week of structured programming from morning to mid-afternoon — group therapy, individual sessions, psychiatric appointments, and skills work — with the client going home or to sober living each evening.

For people leaving luxury residential, PHP often serves as the step-down phase, especially for those who came in at a high level of need or whose home environment calls for a gradual re-entry. Programs that run the full continuum (residential, PHP, IOP, outpatient) provide continuity that standalone PHPs cannot.

For clients who do not need residential-level care from the start, PHP can be a good entry point — particularly when paired with sober living for addiction or strong family support for mental-health conditions.
