Most California programs that come up for luxury mental health treatment are addiction programs with a psychiatrist on staff. Several are excellent, and for someone whose first need is alcohol or drugs they are the right choice. Their week, their therapy and their discharge plan are built around recovery from substance use, with psychiatric care added.

A program that specializes in mental health builds all of it around the condition itself: depression, bipolar disorder, complex trauma. Three programs in California’s luxury tier do, all on the Malibu coast: Amend Malibu, Avalon Malibu,⁴ and the Beach Cottage at Seasons in Malibu, which describes itself as dedicated to mental health treatment.³

Small programs here run roughly $90,000 to $130,000 for thirty days, and some charge more: Carrara Treatment’s monthly rates have been reported as high as $165,000.⁵ Amend Malibu states $90,000 for thirty days.² Most programs share a price only when you call. Nearly all of it is private pay. Some programs work with PPO out-of-network benefits, and their admissions teams will check what your plan covers. One call is worth making before assuming it covers nothing.

Many people looking at these programs describe what they feel as burnout. The World Health Organization classifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon in ICD-11, not a medical condition,⁶so programs don’t admit for burnout on its own.

What they treat is what burnout has often become: depression, an anxiety disorder, or exhaustion after a long stretch of stress.
