Three programs in California admit for the condition itself.

The short version
California’s luxury mental-health tier is three programs, all on the Malibu coast: Amend Malibu, Avalon Malibu, and the Beach Cottage at Seasons. Everywhere else in the state admits for substance use and treats psychiatric conditions alongside it. Amend leads our ranking — two houses of six guests, psychiatry-led, 4.6 across 65 Google reviews transcribed 31 July 2026 — at $90,000 for a thirty-day residence, on a coast where figures run as high as $165,000 a month.

The distinction
What a program admits you for.
Search California for luxury mental health treatment and nearly everything that comes back is a rehab with a psychiatrist on the team. That is not a criticism of those programs — several are excellent, and for someone whose first problem is alcohol or drugs they are the right building. It is a description of what they are built around. The clinical week, the therapy modality, the medication review, the discharge plan: all of it is organised around substance recovery, with psychiatric care layered on.
A mental-health-primary program inverts that. The depression, the bipolar cycle, the complex trauma is the reason for admission and the spine of the plan. In California’s luxury tier that describes three programs, and all three sit on twenty-one miles of the Malibu coast: Amend Malibu, Avalon Malibu,4 and the Beach Cottage at Seasons in Malibu, which its own site describes as strictly dedicated to mental health treatment.3
Of the three, Amend is the one we catalogue in depth and rank first. Two houses of six guests each, with a full clinical team per house — more privacy and more clinician per guest than anywhere else in the state’s luxury tier. Care is led by board-certified chief psychiatrist Dr. William Huang with clinical director Shira Rebibo, LMFT. Joint Commission accredited, and verifiable in the public Quality Check directory in two minutes. Its Google rating, 4.6 across 65 reviews, was transcribed from the live profile on 31 July 2026.1
The money
What a California month actually costs.
At the small-intake tier, roughly $90,000 to $130,000 for thirty days — and the ceiling runs well above that. Carrara Treatment’s monthly room rates have been reported as high as $165,000 across its three houses.5 Most programs share a figure only on inquiry, which makes comparison slower than it should be. Amend states $90,000 for the thirty-day residence: the full two-house, six-guest, psychiatrist-led month.2 Our Malibu cost breakdown carries the whole field, program by program, with every figure sourced and dated.
Nearly all of it is private pay. Several programs work with PPO out-of-network benefits and their admissions teams will check what a specific plan contributes — worth one phone call before assuming the answer is nothing.
Burnout, honestly
Not a diagnosis, but a real reason to go.
A large share of California searches for this tier use the word burnout, and the honest answer starts with a clarification: the World Health Organization classifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon in ICD-11, not a medical condition.6 No program admits you for burnout the way it admits you for depression, because there is nothing there to admit for.
What is real is what burnout has usually become by the time somebody looks for a bed — depression, an anxiety disorder, or the physical exhaustion of a long stretch of untreated stress. Amend names executive burnout on its own admissions list beside depression and complex trauma, which is the right way to hold it: the door you walk in through, with a treatment plan built around what the evaluation actually finds. Our guide to residential burnout treatment covers what a strong program looks like from there.
The honest paragraph
Who California is wrong for.
If someone is in crisis right now — a danger to themselves or anyone else — the answer is 988 or an emergency room today, and residential care after stabilisation rather than instead of it. If detox is the first medical need, this page is the wrong shelf: the addiction-led programs on our Malibu ranking run medical detox and this tier largely does not. If the industry itself is the problem — entertainment, and the circles that come with it — California can seat you at dinner with the world you are trying to leave; Maui Recovery exists for that reader. And if the budget is insurance-led rather than private-pay, findtreatment.gov lists licensed programs across every payment type, and nobody should mortgage a house for a first residential stay.
